Homemade Laundry Detergent

I’ve been making homemade laundry detergent over 3 years now.  I got the basic recipe from a wonderful blog with all sorts of recipes and I’ve kept true to form, but I do like to experiment a bit with it.   The reason I started making my own laundry soap was to get away from store bought brands and save some money.

So without further delay lets to get the recipe (the original can be found on TipNut)

2 Cups of laundry Soap.  (1 14.5 ounce bar of Zote)
1 Cup of Borax
1 Cup of Baking Soda or Laundry Soda or ½ and ½ the two.

For my recipe, this is what I used.
   1 bar of Zote
   1 bar of Fels-Naptha
   1 1/3 cup of Borax
1 1/3 cup of Baking Soda

Other items you will need:
Mixing bowl (one the will be dedicated to the process.)
  Mixing spoon (also dedicated.)
  Measuring cup
1 TBS measuring spoon. (for measuring out your soap for each load.)
1 grater (one you can use solely for making your detergent.)
1 air tight container (your choice.)

Step 1:
Grate your soaps in your mixing bowl.
You can see as I grated the Zote and the Fels-Naptha.

Step 2:
Measure out the Borax and Soda and add to bowl with the soap.

Step 3.
Mix well until the soap, Borax, and soda are well blended.

Step 4:
Pour your mixture or spoon it into your air tight container and Use it.   I use 2 TBS per average load.  It does great.  For bigger or soiled loads I will use 3 TBS.

# of loads I get with one batch is between 25 to 30 loads
You can double the amount or make about 4 gallons at one time. Yes you will need a bigger container :)

If you wondering, I started adding the Fels-Naptha to my mixture to give it more cleaning and whiting power. I have kids and they can soil clothes with the best of them.

Here is a tip:
If you have a stain in an article of clothing that has not been washed, pre-treat the stain with Fels-Naptha.  Just a bit of spot cleaning in that area finish off with one last layer of Fels and throw it into the washer. You will be amazed how well it works, much better then any of the spray stain removers I’ve bought over the years.

Enjoy and Happy Washing!
